Grammar for Job Interviews: 12 Rules You Must Know

Published: 16 July 2026

In an English interview, grammar mistakes are noticed instantly. The good news: you do not need to be perfect. You need to be clear, consistent, and professional. These 12 grammar rules cover 90% of the sentences you will use in a call-center or BPO interview.

1. Use present simple for facts and habits

"I work well under pressure. I always meet my deadlines."

2. Use present continuous for current temporary situations

"I am currently improving my English speaking skills with EIG."

3. Use past simple for finished experiences

"I worked as a customer service representative for one year."

4. Use present perfect for experience without a specific time

"I have handled many angry customers successfully."

5. Use 'would' for polite offers and hypothetical answers

"I would first listen to the customer, then apologize and offer a solution."

6. Use 'could' and 'can' for ability and possibility

"I can work night shifts, and I could start immediately."

7. Use 'should' and 'must' carefully

"We should follow company policy, but we must also keep the customer satisfied."

8. Use the second conditional for hypothetical situations

"If a customer shouted at me, I would stay calm and ask how I can help."

9. Use passive voice for formal business English

"The issue was resolved within 24 hours."

10. Use articles (a/an/the) correctly

"I am looking for a job in a call center. The role requires strong communication skills."

11. Use prepositions of time correctly

"I worked there from 2022 to 2024. I am available on weekends."

12. Use tag questions to sound natural

"Customer service is about empathy, isn't it?"

How to practice these rules

Take one rule per day. Write five sentences using it, then record yourself saying them. After two weeks, combine the rules into full interview answers. This is exactly how EIG's grammar modules are structured — from rule to real interview speech.
